MARY I'm not going to Harvard. I made up my mind on the way back. I'm going to find him. (Marilyn sits, awestruck. She leans back, folds her arms, and tries to hold her anger.) MARILYN Woman, I have made sacrifices for you from the day you were born. Your father- MARY Your husband. MARILYN “Your father and I were agreed on one thing. You would never be without. I don't know where it comes from.” (She shakes her head and gets up. Mary watches and folds her arms, more determined that nothing her mom says will change things. Marilyn reaches into the drawer and pulls out a file. It has a ledger.) MARILYN “I stopped telling myself I would pay him back every dime when you were three.” (Mary takes the ledger. As she leafs through the pages, her mouth widens.) MARY $150,000? MARILYN He sent it last week. I don't know where the money comes from. I don't know how he does it. But your father has been sending money consistently since you were born. He...sent letters. Lots. (Mary looks up, elated, then furious. She leaps up, tears her cap and sash off and throws them down at her mother's feet. Marilyn bristles and then backs off. Mary folds the ledger under her arm and begins to storm out.) MARILYN I still love him. I can still see his eyes. He looked into my mind, Mary. He knew what I was thinking. You don't know what it's like to be loved by a man like that. I couldn't open them. I couldn't have you walking around here reading them when I knew he was not coming back for our sakes.
